in the 3rd grade my parents left the thriving city of highland park (haha) and moved across town to the "up and coming" town of glassell park (haha). in both places, at both schools in the hood, i got beat up by the little mexican "cholas".
well my first friends were my neighbors, george - my age, and his sister loudes - a couple of yrs. younger than us. we were inseperable. we played everyday. we walked the ghetto streets, bought candy at the local "mercado" and played barbies - which is where i learned what an indian giver is - it was me. we swung on all the hammocks in their backyard. i would play with their older sisters makeup and perfume. but most of all we danced and listened to music. george and i would dance together to disco music like a couple on dancing with the stars. we also laughed. a lot. i don't think we ever "didn't" laugh.
so i lost contact with george after we graduated from h.s. and oh how i missed him and lourdes. they were instrumental in the formation of my sense of humor. so...on my 40th bday...on the way home from korea town where i had just gone to my "naked korean spa" - i decided to stop by their mom's house to find them. she still lives in the same house and was so happy to see me. we hooked up that very day. the next week the 3 of us met at starbucks and laughed and caught up on life. i talked to george again when he called me in january. he called to tell me of his nephew who had just had a tragic accident and died. we cried and talked a long time. and, by the end of the long conversation we were laughing - because that's what "we" do. so in feb. i couldn't stand it anymore and i went to see him - evan in toe because he had pink eye and didn't go to school. again, we talked and ate, and shared many memories...but most of all...we laughed. george even spit milk all over me when i was telling him a story.
i just love him and lourdes. life long friends are gifts from the heavens and meant to cherish.
